  • History

    Prior to 1983 there was no independent Department for Handloom & Textiles. The Handloom & Powerloom Industry was looked after by the Department of Sericulture & Weaving, Industries, Cooperation etc. With a view to give undivided attention to the Development of Handloom & Textile industries at the Govt. level, a full fledged Directorate of Handloom & Textiles was created in July, 1983 as per report of the Siva Raman Committee.

    Mission & Vision

    Allround Development of the Handloom & Textiles sector in the State to increase productivity with high end quality to keep pace with the Global Fabric Market and also socio-economic development of the weaving society

    Some of the major works of the department are

    1. Skill Development in Weaving,
    2. Production of Handloom Fabrics,
    3. Design Development
    4. Marketing assistance,
    5. Welfare schemes which also contribute to productivity,

    7. Publicity & Exhibition,
    8. Organising Weavers in Cooperative fold
    9. Cluster based Handloom Development
    10. Enforcement of Handloom Reservation Act.
